ROULETTING

Rouletting decoration is usually a narrow design impressed into the clay body by hand using a roulette wheel, a small hand tool having an engraved design on its outer edge and used to create a pattern on the surface of a clay pot before firing. The wheel could be of different widths so as to produce a variety of decorative bands.

ENGINE TURNING

Engine turned decoration was carried out on a rotating horizontal lathe which enabled very intricate designs to be cut into the surface of a clay body. A variety of patterns can be diced or fluted and the final piece can be covered in complex patterning.
